My gx4 grandfather : Henry Bourne (b1793)

HENRY BOURNE was born circa 1793 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : 1851 census). He was baptised, to parents WILLIAM and GRACE BOURNE, on 28th December 1793 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : Hellingly Baptisms, transcript 1753-1812).

He was a master cordwainer / shoemaker (source : David Packham and Julie Fletcher).

He married MARY WOOD(S) BONIFACE on 6th November 1818 in Pevensey, Sussex (source :IGI, Batch No.:M042501 Dates: 1570 - 1836 Source Call No.:0504417 Type:Film Printout Call No.:NONE Type: Sheet: 00 )(or 6th November 1816 - source : Mandy Willard).

Henry was left Nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings in his uncle Henry's 1825 will (source : Henry Bourne's 1825 will).

On the 1851 census, Henry is living at The Dicker in the parish of Arlington, with his wife and daughter Betsy Ann, and is a cordwainer employing two.


Henry died in 1855 and was buried on 17th September 1855 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). His death was recorded in September quarter 1855 (Free BMD - district Hailsham (covers Hellingly), volume 2b, page 34).

He was a Carpenter & Joiner (source : David Packham). He married JANE ? (born circa 1814 in Hailsham, Sussex) (source : 1851 census). There is a marriage listed for JAMES BOURNE in June quarter 1845, but it could be to either JANE POCOCK or JANE WOOD (source : Free BMD, district Hailsham, volume 7, page 475). On the 1851 census, the whole family is living at "Hailsham - The Town", Sussex and James is a carpenter journeyman. James died on April 20th 1852 (source : Julie Fletcher).

WILLIAM BOURNE was born on June 20th 1824 in Arlington, Sussex (source : Julie Fletcher). He was baptised on 8th August 1824 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). There is only one WILLIAM BOURNE born circa 1824 in the 1881 census (head, M, 55, born Hellingly Sussex, fly proprietor beer retailer), so assuming this is him, he was living and working at the Foresters' Arms, 90 Carlton Hill, Brighton,Sussex, with his wife MARY E BOURNE (48, Edburton Sussex), three sons, WILLIAM R BOURNE (son, U, 20, Brighton Sussex, printer in type for the blind), WALTER BOURNE (son, U, 18, Brighton Sussex, coachsmith) and JOHN H BOURNE (son, 8, Brighton Sussex, scholar), a daughter ADA E BOURNE (dau, 15, Brighton Sussex, scholar - the IGI lists an ADA ELLEN BOURNE, christened on 13th May 1866 at St Nicholas', Brighton, to parents WILLIAM BOURNE and ELLEN - this would suggest that either William married twice, or the MARY E listed on the 1881 census was Mary Ellen : source IGI, Batch No.: C135395, Type : Film), a nephew GEORGE J BOURNE (U, 27, Alfriston Sussex, cellarman wine - this would be his brother HENRY's son) and a number of lodgers.

MARY ANNE BOURNE was born on March 4th 1826 in Arlington, Sussex (source : Julie Fletcher). She was baptised on 11th June 1826 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). She died on March 28th 1851 (source : Julie Fletcher) and was buried on 2nd April 1851 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). In the burial register, her age is given as 24 and her abode as Arlington (source : David Packham). Her death was recorded in March quarter 1851 (Free BMD - district Hailsham (covers Hellingly), volume 7, page 285).

GEORGE BOURNE was born on October 31st 1829 in Arlington, Sussex (source : Julie Fletcher). He was baptised on 10th November 1829 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). He had a private baptism, publicly received on 13th December 1829 (source : David Packham). He died on October 23rd 1847 (source : Julie Fletcher) and was buried on 30th October 1847 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham).

SARAH ANN BOURNE was born on July 27th 1832 in Arlington, Sussex (source : Julie Fletcher). She was baptised on 26th August 1832 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). BETSY ANN BOURNE was born on September 4th 1839 in Arlington, Sussex (source : Julie Fletcher). He was baptised on 20th October 1839 in Hellingly, Sussex (source : David Packham). On the 1851 census, an 11-year-old scholar, she was living with her parents at Upper Dicker, Sussex. On the 1881 census, BETSY A. FOX (wife, 41, Hellingly) and HENRY FOX (head, 45, Arlington, Sussex, general labourer) are living at Cacklebury in Hailsham, Sussex, with their four children
 She married HENRY FOX in Holy Trinity, Upper Dicker, Hellingly, Sussex, on 10th August 1860 (source : David Packham). HENRY FOX was born circa 1836 and was the son of Arthur Fox, a farmer (source : David Packham). The witnesses at the wedding were Cornelius Fox and Susannah Piper (source : David Packham). Henry was a blacksmith, resident of Albourne, at the time of the marriage (source : David Packham). Betsy died on January 22nd 1919,in Shepherd's Bush, London (source : Julie Fletcher)
