My gx3 grandfather : William Sands (b 1810)

The man on the left looks like Joseph William Sands, born 1853, presumably with his father, William Sands, born 1810

WILLIAM SANDS was born circa 1810 in Dallington, Sussex (source : 1861/1881 census). He was christened, to parents SILAS SANDS and ANN, on 4th November 1810 in Dallington, Sussex (source : Dallington Parish register and IGI, Batch No.: C041191 Dates: 1598 - 1810 Source Call No.: 0504412 Type: Film Printout Call No.: 0933238 Type: Film Sheet: 00 ). He was a moulder in an iron/brass foundry (source ; 1861/1881 census) and on the 1861 census, he is listed as deaf.

He married ELIZABETH DADDS on 11th August 1833 in Ashburnham, Sussex (source : Joanne Mays Becker). The witnesses were Elizabeth Dadds and Samuel French (source : Joanne Mays Becker). She died before 1851, when he remarried, because he is listed as a widower at the time of his second marriage (source : BVRI 2d edition). She could be the ELIZABETH DADD, daughter of GEORGE DADD and SARAH, christened on 24th March 1811 in Dallington, Sussex (source : IGI, Batch No.: C041192 Dates:1811 - 1885 Sheet: 00 ).

Aged 39, he remarried 22-year-old ANN POMPHREY (who was almost half his age!) on 30th March 1851, the night before the census, in St Clements Church, Hastings (source : FHL film 1067178 Dates : 1813 - 1884). The marriage was registered in March quarter 1851 (source : Free BMD, volume 7, page 441). She was born circa 1829 in Hastings, Sussex (source : 1851 census and age at wedding) or circa 1813 in Hastings, Sussex (source : 1881 census) and was the daughter of ROBERT POMPHREY (source : wedding register). She is presumably the ANN PUMPHREY, daughter of Robert Pumphrey and Harriet, christened in All Saints, Hastings, Sussex on 22nd September 1830 (source : IGI, Batch No.: C000479 ).

On the 1851 census, the family are at 2 Whites Cottages, Priory Row in Hastings (St Clements). William is an iron moulder and along with wife Ann and the three children from his first marriage James, John and William, there is a 3-year-old nephew, Edward Holden, born in Warbleton.

On the 1861 census, the family are at Britts Passage in Hastings Old Town and William is a deaf iron & brass moulder.

On the 1881 census, William and Ann were at 9 East Hill Passage in Hastings with their 13-year-old daughter Isabella SANDS.

On the 1891 census, William, a 78-year-old (part work) moulder, Ann (60), daughters Alice and Isabella, and a granddaughter, Susan Hulbert, are at 277 Harold Rd, Hastings.

WILLIAM SANDS died after 1891 and before 1901, because ANN is listed as a widow in the 1901 census. There is a death listed for 78-year-old William Sands in June quarter 1891 in Hastings, Sussex, which could be him (source : Free BMD, district Hastings, volume 2b, page 15).
